Composers' Forum with Ben Leeds Carson

25 August 2017

COMPOSERS’ FORUM

Guest: Ben Leeds Carson

Time: 4 September 2017, 19:00

Venue: Wesselényi utca 52, Room 018

The Composition Department of the Liszt Academy revives one of its old traditions: bringing together composers and the BA, MA, DLA students of the department on a forum where thoughts about contemporary tendencies and pieces, own compositions and other matters of mutual interest can be shared and discussed.

It is also planned to continue inviting Hungarian and foreign guests. On our former forums the participants had the opportunity to interchange ideas with such important characters of the contemporary scene as Bence Kutrik, Máté Balogh, Péter Tornyai, Árpád Solti, Lajos Huszár, Gyula Bánkövi, Péter Zombola, Gyula Csapó, Samu Gryllus, Tsao Ming, Luigi Verdi, Richard Dudas, Kjartan Ólaffson, Gergely Vajda, and Hróðmar Ingi Sigurbjörnsson.

On 4 September 2017 the tradition is continued with a lecture by Ben Leeds Carson, professor of the University of California Santa Cruz.

[Carson’s] ideas…the establishment and erosion of musical boundaries, the evolution/devolution of melody, and the use of silence as a structural component…take shape in swiftly scurrying flurries, motifs fast or slow…sudden fortes that produce an impact out of proportion with their amplitude. To say that [Persistent Names of Lost Spaces] is too long…would be paraphrasing [Emperor Joseph II] chiding Mozart for writing “too many notes.”
