Weiner Leó National Chamber Music Competition 2019

The Weiner Foundation and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music present the National Leó Weiner Chamber Music Competition for violin-piano sonatas, string quartets, and string trios.

Musicians of all nationalities who completed their studies in Hungarian secondary or tertiary music institutions or are currently enrolled in secondary or tertiary (doctoral programs included) music institutions are eligible to apply.

In the category ‘violin-piano sonata’ the participants’ the members’ combined age cannot exceed 60 years.

In the category ‘string trio’ the participants’ the members’ combined age cannot exceed 90 years.

In the category ‘string quartet’ the members’ combined age cannot exceed 120 years.

 

 

Date of the competition: 8-14 April 2019

8 April (Monday), 10:00: opening ceremony. Tamás Vásáry, the head of the jury, pianist and conductor opens the competition.

8-10 April (Monday-Wednesday): first rounds

11-12 April (Thursday-Friday): second rounds

14 April (Sunday), 18.00: award ceremony, 19.00: concert of awardees

Prizes

1st prize: 200.000 HUF scholarship/member, invitations for local and international concerts

2nd prize: 150.000 HUF scholarship/member

3rd prize: 120.000 HUF scholarship/member

 

Special prizes:

  • The best Weiner performance
  • The best Mozart performance
  • The best Beethoven performance
  • Audience award

The jury has the right to decide not to award certain prizes.

 

 

The competition has two rounds with the following materials:

 

Category: violin-piano

First Round:

a) One of the following four sonatas:

  • Mozart: Sonata for Violin and Piano in D major, K. 306
  • Mozart: Sonata for Violin and Piano in B-flat major, K. 378
  • Beethoven: Sonata for Violin and Piano in E flat major, Op. 12/3
  • Beethoven: Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major, Op. 30/1

b) two movements of one of Weiner’s sonatas chosen by the group:

  • Sonata for Violin and Piano in D major, Op. 9
  • Sonata for Violin and Piano in F-sharp minor, Op. 11

 

Second Round:

a) any sonata by Mozart in case the group chose a Beethoven piece in the 1st round OR any sonata by Beethoven in case the group chose a Mozart piece in the 1st round

b) the entire sonata by Weiner the group chose in the 1st round

Category: string quartet

First Round:

a) One of the following four string quartet pieces:

  • Mozart: String Quartet in G major, K. 387
  • Mozart: String Quartet in D major, K. 499
  • Beethoven: String Quartet in D major, Op. 18/3
  • Beethoven: String Quartet in C minor, Op. 18/4

b) two movements of one of Weiner’s string quartets chosen by the group:

  • String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 4
  • String Quartet in F-sharp minor, Op. 13
  • String Quartet in G major (pastoral, fantasia, and fugue), Op. 26

 

Second Round:

a) any string quartet by Mozart in case the group chose a Beethoven piece in the 1st round OR any string quartet by Beethoven in case the group chose a Mozart piece in the 1st round

b) the entire string quartet by Weiner the group chose in the 1st round

Category: string trio

First Round:

a) one of the following four trios:

  • any string trios of Beethoven from Op. 9
  • Schubert: String Trio in B-flat major, D. 581

b) Weiner: two movements of String Trio, Op. 6 chosen by the group

 

Second Round:

a) any string trio by Beethoven in case the group chose a Schubert piece in the 1st round OR any string quartet by Schubert in case the group chose a Beethoven piece in the 1st round

b) the entire string trio by Weiner

The Mozart pieces are preferred to be played from Bärenreiter, Henle, or Wiener Urtext (if necessary) editions.

In case of the Beethoven sonatas, the Peters edition (Nr. 3031) designated by Joseph Joachim is also acceptable besides the Henle edition.
