HISTORY OF WESTERN MUSIC (BA)

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the most important periods, trends, styles, genres, creators, works, performing art and life of Western Civilization's music. It only touches upon music from other cultures (Oriental, African), folk music, and jazz.

HISTORY OF HUNGARIAN MUSIC (BA)

The aim of this course is to introduce international students to Hungarian music.

The course is announced in the spring semester once in two or three years.

Duration of the course: 1 semester

 

FOLK MUSIC (BA)

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with folk music as a fundamental layer of Hungarian musical heritage. The syllabus includes the musical as well as the cultural-ethnographic components of folk music.

CONCERT ATTENDANCE (BA/MA performing artist majors)

By attending concerts and operas students' repertoire is enriched and they are able to study various approaches of performers and this way they familiarize themselves with styles, musical language, and the musical scene that they will be part of as performers, composers, and musicologists.
 
Requirements

Due to the nature of this course no compulsory reading is assigned. Students should consult the scores of the works in question.

Students have to prove that they have attended at least 8 significant public concerts and opera performances during the semester. As the subject aims at improving general knowledge of music, the attended events have to be chosen in a way that is representative for the multifaceted musical life in Budapest. The following events are excluded: department concerts, diploma concerts, concerts the student performed at. Students may also be asked to answer any questions based on their experience of the concerts and operas they attended during the semester.

The Concert Attendance Journal is to be used to note down the details of the concerts attended in the semester.

Type of grade
Qualifying signature given on a three-point scale: well accomplished (5), adequate (3), not adequate (1).
 
This course is related to music history, therefore the teacher responsible for that course verifies the completion of the course by his signature.

Conductor of the examination is the instructor of the music history classes.

CONCERT ATTENDANCE (BA/MA conducting majors)

 

The compulsory subject Concert Attendance for students of conducting is to be completed as follows:

 

  1. All students are to visit rehearsals of professional orchestras and choirs appointed by the Liszt Academy for this purpose.
     
  2. 10 x 3 hours of rehearsals are to be attended in a semester to get the necessary verifying signature to complete the course.
     
  3. The ratio of the rehearsal attendances is to be as follows:
  • BA orchestral and choral conductors: 50-50 % orchestra and choir rehearsals
  • BA and MA choir conductors: approx. 2/3 choir, 1/3 orchestra rehearsals
  • BA and MA orchestral conductors: approx. 2/3 orchestra, 1/3 choir rehearsals
  1. The rehearsals are to be attended with the Orchestra Observation Journal, and to get a verifying signature on it for the attendance by the appointed representative of the orchestra/choir, except for the rehearsals in the opera house, in which case Ms. Júlia Belicza verifies the attendance.
     
  2. The rehearsals of the following orchestras are to be attended:
  • Orchestra of the Hungarian Opera: application for attendance to be made with Júlia Belicza at Room 006 in the Ligeti building, 2 weeks before the rehearsal at the latest.
  • National Philharmonic Orchestra: application for attendance to be made with the appointed staff member of the orchestra
  • Hungarian Radio Orchetra: application for attendance to be made with the appointed staff member of the orchestra
  1. The rehearsals of the following choirs are to be attended:
     
  • National Philharmonic Choir: application for attendance to be made with the appointed staff member of the orchestra
  • Hungarian Radio Orchestra: application for attendance to be made with the appointed staff member of the orchestra

  7. Students are notified about the rehearsal schedules by staff members of the Study Department via e-mail.

 

Index to be signed by the head of the conducting department for the index in the examination period, after all necessary verifying signatures for the attendances have been collected.

ACOUSTICS (BA)

The aim of the course is to make students:

  • know and understand the unity of sound source, sound-field and auditory perception, through the introduction of the concept of sound
  • discover the relations between the material and the musical world
  • learn sounds' psychoacoustic characteristics
  • learn to use the system of concepts for acoustics
  • acquire basic skills in sound-editing and sound-recording techniques
  • learn to use their knowledge about the acoustic characteristics of instruments (vocal organs) and rooms/halls in practice.

MUSIC HISTORY – FOLK MUSIC (MA)

The aim of this course is to discuss certain topics of music history, and provide a basic introduction to Hungarian folk music.
