Born to Jewish parents in Poland, Mieczysław Weinberg fled the country for the Soviet Union in 1939. No one in his family survived the Holocaust. His exceptionally rich oeuvre is similar to Shostakovich’s in many regards, and he may also resemble his older colleague in that his work has enjoyed a veritable renaissance in the past decade, as avant-garde music’s popularity has waned. Mahler, Bartók, and Prokofiev all influenced his style, but he was also interested in Armenian, Polish, Uzbek, and East European Jewish music. The concert programme draws and develops on Wartime Consolations, the record of the great violinist, Linus Roth.
