The medieval hymn Stabat Mater, most commonly attributed to Jacopone da Todi, has inspired a long line of composers over the centuries. Gioachino Rossini, renowned primarily for his operas, began composing his own version of the Stabat Mater in 1831, completing it only in 1841. The world premiere took place in Paris in 1842, where it was met with immense success. Rossini’s Stabat Mater portrays the Virgin Mary’s suffering during Christ’s crucifixion with an exceptionally powerful and dramatic musical language. While the composition incorporates traditional ecclesiastical styles, it also features Rossini’s signature operatic elements. This masterpiece, which involves both orchestra and choir, will be performed by the Liszt Academy Symphony Orchestra and Alma Mater Choir – the musicians of tomorrow – under the direction of Meritorious Artist and Liszt Ferenc Prize-winning conductor Csaba Somos. The vocal soloists, too, are all students of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.
