The concert of the Liszt Academy Symphony Orchestra begins with one of Ferenc Liszt’s most enigmatic works, the symphonic poem dedicated to the mythical singer Orpheus. The piece’s unique, elusive form and its abstract musical material, independent of any programmatic reference, have recently gained new analytical perspectives. This exceptionally exciting composition has been rediscovered by both Liszt scholars and modern music aesthetics. Gábor Takács-Nagy, in this performance, undertakes the grand task of enveloping the earth and the universe – borrowing Liszt’s words – with “the transparent, azure, ethereal spirit of music”, and “the inexpressible and mysterious cloak of harmony”. This may be similar to what Saint-Saëns aimed for when he dedicated the end of his famous “organ symphony” to “the blue of the pure sky”. In addition to these masterpieces, the concert offers an excellent opportunity for two young musicians, both students at the Liszt Academy, to showcase their talents: pianist Attila Szaniszló and organist Lilla Werner.
