Oboe Master Classes and Exhibition at the Liszt Academy

The master class of Sanja Romić and Matthieu Petitjean will take place on 18 and 19 March from 10.00 to 18.00 in Auditorium I of the Main Building on Liszt Square, while the instrument exhibition will also be open to the public on both days from 9.00 to 19.00 in auditorium II.

Admission to the programmes is free of charge, no pre-registration is required, but a sign-in sheet is required at the entrance.

As student of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest Sanja Romić has studied with Péter Pongratz and Gábor Dienes, graduating with honours, awarded by the Soros Foundation Grant. At Mozarteum University in Salzburg she studied with Stefan Schilli and soon after won her first solo oboe position at the Opera and Ballet Orchestra in Ljubljana, that followed with solo oboe position in the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, 2011–2024. There she had great chance to work with Maestro Zubin Mehta. Upon his invitation Sanja joined Maestro’s three final summer tours in 2019 with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as guest principal oboe. Passion for orchestral playing she is sharing as orchestra mentor and coach for wind instruments at Orchestra Academy of Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, Al Bustan Festival Youth Orchestra in Lebanon, West Balkan Youth Orchestra, FAME’S- European Orchestral Performing Institute. Sanja is also working as associate professor for orchestral studies for woodwind instruments at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, highely active as solo and chamber musician.

She held oboe masterclasses in Serbia, Ireland, Slovenia, Hungary, Lebanon, Montenegro. Her first online masterclass for oboists „BackToBasics“ appeared in June 2023. Interested in movement and body mechanics, she advocates ease of playing focusing on body- mind synergy and health care for musicians that is represented within her teaching concept „Playing & Living with Ease“. Podcast of the same name embraces all of her teaching methods with professional coaching practice for musicians.

She published and contributed in numerous CD and audio recordings.

Matthieu Petitjean started learning the oboe in Paris with Michel Giboureau (former principal oboe of the Mito Chamber Orchestra and orchestre de Chambre de Paris), with whom he won several prizes such as the 1st Prize at the UFAM competition in Paris or a 3rd prize at the Chieri International Competition for Young Musicians Italy. He then entered the prestigious Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique with Jacques TYS where he got his master degree with the highest honors. Besides, Matthieu will become the first French winner of the Lady Barbirolli International Oboe Competition (1st Prize) held in Great Britain. He then decided to move to Germany to complete his curriculum, learning the German style of playing with the best teachers. During two years, he had the chance to study with Pr. Klaus Becker and Pr. Ingo Goritzki. Thanks to this collaborations, Matthieu has been appointed Principal Oboe of the Niedersächsisches Staatsoper in 2009 (Hannover State Opera). This new position allowed him to play as guest with famous European orchestras such as the Nord Deutsche Rundfunk, Deutsches Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Philarmoniker Hamburg, Radio Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Frankfurt Staatsoper, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Bremer Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Radio France, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Filarmonica della Scala Milano. In 2013 he joins the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where he perfects his knowledge of the German lyrical repertoire under the direction of great conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Fabio Luisi or Kyrill Petrenko. It is finally in 2014 that Matthieu is appointed to his current formation, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in Monaco, as first principal oboe. Since 2016 he is also a member of the renowned Saito Kinen Orchestra founded and led by the legendary Seiji Ozawa and a teacher at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken. Matthieu Petitjean is the head of the oboe department at Buffe-Crampon and a Buffet Crampon artist.
