Classical Double Bass admission requirements for MA studies

Due to the coronavirus emergency situation, entrance examinations and admission requirements are modified in 2020. Please see the red text below for the current admission requirements.

Information about the admission examinations and calculation of scores in the admission procedure in 2020 can be found here.

Main Subject

  • Two etudes – one is chosen by the candidate, the other one announced below one month prior to the entrance exam.
    • Compulsory etude in 2020: Simandl: Etude in E flat major (booklet nr. VII, Etude nr. 1, Allegro moderato)
  • One short piece (performed without sheet music)
  • One slow and one fast movement of a sonata
  • One slow and one fast movement of a concerto (performed without sheet music)

Length of recording: approx. 30 minutes

The sonata movement and the concerto movement must be different in style.

 

Due to the coronavirus emergency situation, there will be no examination in music theory during the 2020 entrance examinations.

 

 

 

 

Admission requirements in 2019

Main subject:

  • Two etudes: One chosen by the candidate, and one compulsory etude chosen by the examination panel one month before the audition date.
  • One short piece - solo or with accompaniment.
  • One complete sonata.
  • One complete concerto played from memory.
  • Sight-reading of an orchestral part given on the day of the examination.

The sonata and the concerto have to be of different style.

 

Recommended material:

  • Solo piece: a movement from a Bach cello suite, pieces by Koussevitzky, Bottesini, etc.
  • Sonata: Misek I, II, Hindemith, etc.
  • Concerto: Dittersdorf, Vanhal, Bottesini, Koussewitzky, etc.

 

Compulsory etude in 2020:
F. Simandl: New Method for the Double Bass vol. 7, 1. Etude in E flat major Allegro moderato

 

General Admission Requirements – MA

Written examination:

  • Bass harmonisation: harmonisation of a bass line of cca. 10 notes, indication of the accords with figures.
  • Analysis: formal analysis of the opening movement of a sonata from the stylistic circle of Haydn and Mozart piano sonatas.

 

Exam in general music studies:

  • Identification of 10 music pieces - possibly composer and title, but at least the epoch or style and identification or the genre.
  • Explanation and interpretation of 10 music terms, concepts, titles, etc.
