Organ admission requirements for MA studies

The two locations of the entrance examination in the academic year 2019/20 are the following:

Old Academy of Music, Bach Room / Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music, Gergely Ferenc Hall


  • J.S. Bach: one trio sonata BWV 525 – 530 to be chosen by the candidate, to be played from memory
  • a chorale received on the spot to be harmonized in J. S. Bach's style
  • a piece announced on 27 May 2019: Kagel: Rrrrrrr.... Acht Stücke – 3. Repercussa, 6. Ripieno (sheet music is available here)
  • a 100-120-minute programme covering as many styles as possible and taking the instruments characteristics into consideration. The programme is to be sent to Mr Zoltán Borzi (borzi.zoltan[at] until 20 May 2019 the latest.

The pieces to be played will be chosen by a committe from the repertoire, and candidates will be notified about the audition programme until 3 June 2019.

The entrance examination committee shall retain the right to listen to the entire programme or parts of it.

The applicants may practice weekly in June on the instrument at the Bach Room.


General Admission Requirements:

Written examination:

  • Bass harmonisation: harmonisation of a bass line of cca. 10 notes, indication of the accords with figures.
  • Analysis: formal analysis of the opening movement of a sonata from the stylistic circle of Haydn and Mozart piano sonatas.

Exam in general music studies:

  • Identification of 10 music pieces - possibly composer and title, but at least the epoch or style and identification of the genre.
  • Explanation and interpretation of 10 music terms, concepts, titles, etc.
