Liszt Academy’s student wins prestigious Ibero-American award

3 January 2022

Aurés Moussong’s composition for percussion quartet “Desde el lugar del misterio" (From the place of the mystery) won “Prize Ibermúsicas for composition and work premiere 2022” at the prestigious Music Composition Contest.

Summoned by Ibermusicas, a multilateral international Ibero-American cooperation program dedicated exclusively to the musical arts that fosters the presence and knowledge of the area’s musical diversity.

The contest, organized every year and whose prize consists of 5000 euros, invited composers from the Iberoamerican countries to participate with an individual composition work, proposing a collaboration with an ensemble from another country.

Aurés Moussong, a Hungarian and Mexican citizen who started his master studies in music composition in 2019 with professor Fekete Gyula, will therefore collaborate with the Portuguese Pulsat Percussion Group. His winning piece will see its premiere and recording next year in Oporto, for which the composer will travel to Portugal to work closely with the ensemble.

The work is distinguished by using a combination of instruments typical of the multi-percussion ensemble but includes also the use of some indigenous instruments of pre-Hispanic origin, such as the huehuetl, teponaztle or the ayoyotes. It is also inspired by anonymous Aztec poetry from the fourteenth and fifthteenth centuries, prior to the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish Empire.

The jury pointed out the high artistic level of most of the works submitted to the competition, of which the winning pieces were chosen, by absolute consensus among the three members of the jury.
