Zugló Philharmonic, who have nearly reached their 60th birthday and are proud holders of the title National Youth Orchestra, are staging a special concert of two instrumental compositions by Mendelssohn accompanied by two Magnificat arrangements. The Hebrides Overture recounts the personal experiences of a 21-year-old Mendelssohn in Scotland, whereas the Violin Concerto in E minor was one of the last works of the composer. After the intermission the orchestra are joined by the excellent Cantemus Choir of Nyíregyháza, who are worthy guardians of the spirit and choral traditions associated with Zoltán Kodály. Kossuth Prize-winner Miklós Kocsár composed his piece – based on a medieval Hymn to Mary – specially for the chorus; finally, we hear the early variation in E flat major of J. S. Bach’s Magnificat. Conductor for the evening is Cantemus artistic director Soma Szabó who graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and is active there as conductor and professor.
