One would be hard pushed to imagine greater praise for a Hungarian jazz band than when a person born and brought up on authentic ragtime refers to the group as one of the best in the world. Yet this is exactly what happened to Benkó Dixieland Band, and the words of praise came from none other than former US president Ronald Reagan. The story of the formation headed up by clarinettist Sándor Benkó is stunning even when told in numbers: 56 years of activity, 81 or so recordings, more than 10,000 concert appearances, a good three dozen prizes and awards, and an uncountable number of world stars, indeed legends (from Milt Jackson to Buddy Tate), who have played with the band at one time or another.
