-;-Gergely Bogányi (piano)
The keys of a piano come in two colours: there are many white keys, and somewhat fewer black. However, the colours of music written for the piano are not defined by these two shades. Particularly not in the case of composers such as Schumann, Liszt or Bartók, and even less so when interpreted by such artists as Gergely Bogányi. Under his fingers even the meditative compositions that could be termed monochromatic dazzle in a thousand colours, as Liszt’s ’modernist’ movements in the volume closing The Years of Pilgrimage. The later style of Liszt was particularly inspiring for Béla Bartók, and this programme not only reveals the Liszt-Bartók relationship but makes it come alive. And as to which secret (and not so confidential) relationships can be discovered between different people and composers, well Schumann’s kaleidoscope Carnival has answers.
