-;-Előad és vezényel: Hollerung Gábor
This time Gábor Hollerung, equally outstanding as narrator and conductor, uses the ’Understandable Music’ series to guide us through the riddle of a contemporary work. Zoltán Kovács, who graduated from the Liszt Academy Composition Department under Emil Petrovics in 1993, is also known as a bassoon player (he played with the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra for many years). His Symphony No. 1 debuted in 2001, but as far as its music style goes, it could have been composed a century earlier, and the fact that it would in all likelihood have stood its ground even then is praise indeed of the talent of its author. The beauty of the piece and technical skill of its composer was sufficient to silence even the biggest critics of the postmodern school of composition: the four movements retell the story of St. Agnes in the language of 19th century programme music, and as one critic wrote of the premiere: “there is not a single moment in the work that is not inspired”.
