One gets the feeling that the charismatic Anoushka Shankar plays with the gods, or at the very least does not shy away from challenges. Her father, Ravi Shankar, was a legend in her life, since he had a major impact not only on 20th century Indian traditions but Western art music, jazz and popular genres, too. Time has proven Anoushka correct in her decision – or the decision of the gods – to follow in the footsteps of her father and become a sitar artist. Ravi Shankar once wrote: “I am waiting for the time when I will be known as Anoushka’s father… Anoushka has a rare talent … there is something spiritual in the way she plays … she feels the music and gives into it.” She gave her first concert in Hungary at the Liszt Academy just prior to its renovation, and one critic later wrote that her father’s wish had been fulfilled: Ravi is now ‘only’ Anoushka’s father.
