Anyone who tracks the career of Iván Fischer will not be surprised to hear that the Budapest Festival Orchestra were the first symphony orchestra in Hungary to form a period ensemble. Iván Fischer is a seminal figure in early music performance practice; he studied under Nikolaus Harnoncourt and eventually became assistant to the master, and he even played viola da gamba in various chamber ensembles. For this occasion the historical ensemble of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, under second conductor of Les Arts Florissants, Jonathan Cohen, present Baroque works. The concert offers a cross-section of concertos from the first half of the 18th century by the most important composers of the genre: Corelli, Vivaldi, Telemann, Händel and Bach. The violin solo is performed by the finest Croatian Baroque violinist of our day, Bojan Čičić, who regularly features in leading early music ensembles and knows everything about authentic period violin playing. Besides the concertos there are two Vivaldi cantatas, featuring the highly suggestive voice of Catalan star counter-tenor Xavier Sabata. The whole performance is lended totally authenticity by the fact that the greatest expert on Baroque stage gesture, Sigrid T’Hooft, helped prepare the production.
