Born in 1756, the same year as Mozart, Thomas Linley died tragically young, at the age of twenty. Like Mozart, he was a prodigy, and the two adolescent geniuses actually became friends when they met in Italy, where Linley stayed between 1768 and 1771. Thanks to György Vashegyi, the Orfeo Orchestra, the Purcell Choir, and the great soloists of the concert, Mozart and the “English Mozart" can now meet again. Mozart thought highly of the talent of Linley, who was also a splendid violinist. Linley “was a true genius," told Mozart to an English friend, Michael Kelly, who worked in Vienna as an opera singer. “[H]ad he lived, [he] would have been one of the greatest ornaments of the musical world." György Vashegyi, who is a keen explorer of old music specialties, will conduct a work by Linley that evokes Shakespeare’s “spirits," as well as an unfinished mass by Mozart. The latter is a telling illustration of what it meant for Mozart to become more familiar with the music of another genius, Johann Sebastian Bach.
