Kossuth Prize winner violinist Barnabás Kelemen (36) founded his string quartet in 2010, and very shortly thereafter they were counted as regulars on the domestic and international chamber music scene. In their first year after foundation they took first place at the Beijing International Music Competition and triumphed in the same year on another continent when they received the audience prize and one of the grand prix as silver medallists of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. Since then the formation have played with countless international stars, and at this concert they also take to the stage with representatives of the young musicians’ generation standing on the threshold of global stardom in a Brahms masterpiece following the two core works of the glorious string quartet repertoire. Norwegian Vilde Frang was just 10 when she first played with an orchestra; not much later Mariss Jansons invited her to be a soloist and then she partnered Anne-Sophie Mutter on the violin in Bach’s duet concerto. Nicolas Altstaedt is similarly a celebrated artist in Hungary; he has appeared at the Kaposfest with members of the Kelemen Quartet on several occasions. Today, the German-French cellist is also an active player in international music, so much so that Gidon Kremer appointed him as his successor for the post of artistic director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, indeed from next season he will take over the baton from Ádám Fischer at the head of the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra.
