Just like their fellow orchestra the Vienna Philharmonics, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra established in 1900 and hallmarked by premieres of numerous Bruckner, Schönberg and Ravel works, are also a representative and personification of the inimitable ‘Viennese sound’. Their approach has been shaped by legendary conductors such as Richard Strauss, Josef Krips, Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Hans Knappertsbusch, György Széll and Herbert von Karajan, although the orchestra have been directed by virtually every leading conductor of the second half of the 20th century including Bernstein, Maazel, Mehta, Abbado, Kleiber and Celibidache to name but a few. Over the past few decades the history of the ensemble has been closely associated with Wolfgang Sawallisch and Georges Prêtre. Each season the orchestra (under the leadership of music director Philippe Jordan from 2014–2015) welcome some 30 conductors, one of them being artistic director and conductor of the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Charles Dutoit, who is approaching his 80th birthday. He is reckoned to be one of the most significant and dedicated interpreters of 20th century French and Russian music. The Swiss conductor has selected three emblematic compositions from this marvellously rich repertoire, performed by an ensemble of world renown.
