Membra Jesu Nostri

Vezényel: Vashegyi György
As a young man Johann Sebastian Bach walked 450 kilometres to hear the organ playing of Dietrich Buxtehude. Ironically, it was precisely Bach who obscured the name and the work of the German Baroque composer (b. 1637, d. 1707) for later generations, although he wrote superb music, one example of which is the Latin cantata cycle connected with the afflictions of Jesus, and which – suitably enough – is performed on Good Friday by fine vocal soloists and the Purcell Chorus, who play on period instruments. The seven-movement masterpiece created in 1680 is an extremely varied musical composition rich in characters. Conductor and early music specialist György Vashegyi has already drawn the attention of audiences to many works that were lost in obscurity over the centuries; together with his two ensembles founded 25 years ago. To the delight of audiences he explores the Baroque age both in a geographical and stylistic sense, and he is associated with remarkable and important premieres in Hungary. This production is a further shining example of this exciting journey of discovery.
