Kossuth prize winner Barnabás Kelemen barely needs introduction: he is one of Hungary’s best known young violinists as both soloist and chamber musician. The 36-year-old plays on a Guarneri violin once owned by Dénes Kovács, himself a leading Hungarian violinist for several decades. Kelemen achieved his status after a stunning start: in a single year, 2001, he achieved a world-famous result at the two most prestigious international violin competitions, in Brussels and Indianapolis, not only taking first place in the latter but six special prizes on tOp. Thanks to his remarkable musicality, when he plays, the works sound as though they were born there and then, and what’s more, Barnabás Kelemen is an ‘omnivore’: he performs classical compositions – like the two Beethoven sonatas in this concert – with exactly the same gusto and verve as any other music, whether klezmer, Gypsy music, jazz or Argentine tango. He could not have found a better partner than José Gallardo, well known from the Kaposvár International Chamber Music Festival, who similarly is a musician of many parts with astonishing technique, and who has already gifted Hungarian audiences with unforgettable experiences on many other occasions.
