György Vashegyi (conductor)
György Vashegyi, professor of continuo, taught at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music even before he was awarded his diploma, and he became one of the most important, central personalities of early music practice in this institution, as he has in domestic music life, too. In this latter area the two ensembles he himself founded, the Purcell Choir (1990) and Orfeo Orchestra (1991), have grown to become flagships of the early music movement in Hungary. The works of Johann Sebastian Bach have always had a prominent position in their joint appearances, as will be evident in this Christmas concert programme staged in the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy. Two of the four featured cantatas composed in Leipzig between 1724-1726 are closely connected to the Christmas period.
