During the closing concert of the 2nd Budapest Guitar Festival dedicated to Leo Brouwer, the audience receives a taste of the oeuvre of Leo Brouwer, one of the most important Cuban composers of the 20th century, thanks to a solo by the massively influential guitarist Costas Cotsiolis accompanied by the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra. The guarantee of a totally authentic interpretation is given by the fact that Cotsiolis has been playing Brouwer pieces for many years. Juan Leovigildo Brouwer Mezquida was born in Havana in 1939, he started his studies in the city of his birth but moved to the US where he studied as a student of the Juilliard School of Music (guitar and composition). During the 1970s he lived in Berlin, where he came into contact with European avant-garde composers who had a great impact on his style. His career as a performance artist was brought to a sudden end due to a tendon injury in 1980, however, he remains active to this day as both a composer and conductor.
