When a composition starting with a profoundly seriousness unexpectedly changes into a trivial melody, with good reason we may think the compositor is kidding us. Though revealing that he is not kidding us but being absorbed in playing, the way only a child may, is the highest amusement to us. The way Mozart played in his series of variations composed for piano, Ernő Dohnányi also played a deadly serious game.
There are moments when game becomes deadly serious in the full sense of the word. Let's recall a novel by Dostoievsky or an opera by Tchaikovsky. Stravinsky did all but denying his Russian origin – why, in this piece, game means exclusively gambling. However, with an enormous stake. A game of cards played with the devil, like in the Soldier's Tale or The Rake's Progress, none less is at stake in the game than salvation or damnation. The three-part ballet music Jeu de cartes (Game of Cards) is apparently harmless, for the compositor raised a musical monument “all in all” to the memory of his passion for poker.
