It was in the early 1980s that four young siblings of a Salzburg family decided to maintain the tradition of domestic chamber music, and started to play together. The artists who subsequently helped them shape their orientation included Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gidon Kremer, and they came to work with György Kurtág, Maurizio Pollini, Krystian Zimmermann and Mitsuko Uchida. During their 2012-2013 concert tour, they played Beethoven’s complete string quartets at the world’s greatest concert halls, from New York through Tokyo, Paris and London to Vienna. Deutsche Grammophon, which they have been associated with for twenty years, has released 45 of their CDs. The Hagen Quartet celebrated its 30th anniversary recently-with three of the four original members. They embrace the complete repertoire of the genre from Haydn to contemporary composers, and though Haydn himself is not part of their Budapest programme, they will nonetheless evoke his spirit. Jörg Widmann’s String Quartet No. 2, written between 2003-2006 and consisting of a single, grand slow movement, was evidently inspired by Haydn’s famous cycle, The Seven Last Words of Christ.
