The Liszt Academy and Korean Liszt Society have enjoyed a close relationship for six years, and the upshot of this friendship is the opportunity for the winner of the Korean Liszt Competition to study in Budapest for one year and give a concert in the Old Academy of Music. The two institutions have put together many joint projects: most recently, last autumn there was a celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korean and Hungary. This concert has now reached Budapest, featuring world premieres by contemporary Korean composers and works by seminal Hungarian composers (Liszt, Kodály, Bartók, Lajtha). The recital, the brainchild of president of the Korean Liszt Society Yun Ha Hwang, demonstrates the Bartókian principle of ‘peoples becoming brothers’, because although geographically and historically speaking Korea and Hungary lie far from one another, the one thing that can certainly bridge this divide is music.
