A dedicated promoter of modern Polish music, the Lutosławski Quartet is a regular guest of the most prestigious festivals of modern music. In addition to the classical repertoire, the quartet is considered a specialist of the leading 20th-century representatives of the genre, and often plays contemporary works. The members are open towards the most diverse styles, and have performed with renowned jazz musicians, including Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, and Uri Caine. The quartet, which is among the most accomplished interpreters of the works of Karol Szymanowski and Dmitri Shostakovich, has a composer among its members, second violinist Marcin Markowicz. Their Budapest programme includes the only string quartet of the composer whose name they adopted, which has been performed by the best quartets over the past half a century. The piece makes a special demand on the chamber musicians, as it “expects the musicians to think, feel and make decisions independently of one another. Every player performs their part as if they were playing on their own,” wrote the composer.
