The New York-based, Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which boasts more than seventy records and nearly fifty dedicated compositions, has been one of the world’s most significant chamber orchestras ever since its foundation in 1972. Working on a democratic basis without a conductor, they regularly perform at the Carnegie Hall, have toured all continents with the exception of Antarctica, and have worked with almost every important soloist of the past four decades. More than a practical consideration, democratic decision-making is also an ideal for them, which they seek to pass on to new generations in the course of their learning programmes. At the Budapest Spring Festival they will perform one of Haydn’s so-called “Sturm und Drang" symphonies, the dramatic No. 80 in D minor, along with a Romantic and a 20th-century masterpiece. The ensemble commissioned three new works for the 2015 concert season, calling the initiative “American Notes." The composers are Anna Cyne, Timo Andres, and phenomenal Turkish pianist Fazil Say. Mr Say’s new piece will also be performed in Budapest, a few days after its American premiere.
